saving myself over $40

May 4th, 2008

i’ve been meaning to blog about this for a while.. but alas, life has taken up all my blogging time.

when i moved into my new house… i already decided that the second bedroom would be my office

. the only thing is that there was no phone jack in that room. so i had two choices for my internet options: 1) drill holes in walls and run a cat5 cable to my computer in my office or 2) buy a wireless card for my desktop computer.

after some research, and determining that option #2 would be around $50 and a whole lot less time/effort, it made my decision easy.

fast forward to after the airport extreme card is delivered. i open up my g5… install the card.. and have no issues whatsoever…. well.. until it comes to the point of connecting to the airport extreme router that is just down the hall.

turns out that i need to have an external antenna piece… that came with the computer

I Am Legend film .. now… i bought that computer over 4 years ago.. and have moved 4 times since then… so to find a little piece of plastic would be nearly impossible

.

so i call the apple store. “no we don’t sell those. you’ll have to go to macsales.com or something like that” don’t you have them in the genius area or anything “no. i don’t think so. sorry”

i look online. the site that the apple store employee told me to go to did not have any such thing. i do a search online. $35 for a cheap piece of plastic… and NINE DOLLARS FOR SHIPPING?! oh come on. you’ve got to be kidding me. this thing probably costs less than a buck to make.

fast forward over my griping and complaining. i look in my “bucket of wires/connectors/adapters” and find an antenna wire for my old stereo that stopped working. it’s just a simple piece of wire… and thats really all an antenna is… right? well.. lets try sticking it in the back of the g5 and see what happens.

*poof* full strength wi-fi signal.

dear apple. you should really stop telling people they have to pay over $40 for something that can be fixed for around $0.50.

wow. i love macs even more now…

October 27th, 2007

so i just upgraded both of my computers to leopard and i must say… i’m impressed. more-so than i even expected to be. i was having some weird issues with my g5 tower before.. so i decided to do a “clean install” and erase everything on the computer when i installed the new OS. i have a backup of all my files elsewhere, so i figured this would be easy. the only thing that would take a while would be re-installing all my programs… but i figured that would be an easy task to do this weekend (tedious, but easy) so i install leopard on my laptop.. and that takes around an hour and a half. so when i left my g5 tower install overnight while i was sleeping. then today i start installing my programs…. and i think “hey.. i have all these programs already on my laptop.. i wonder if i can just drag them over the network” so it try it. and sure enough. it works. crazy! and then i’m playing around with the syncing on both my macs… and suddenly all my settings are remembered. wow. i was thinking that the re-setup of this machine would be a good day and half project… but apple and all their crazy perfectionism made my life insanely easy. so now i can get work done instead of installing and setting things up. oh. and this “spaces” thing is stinkin’ incredible! i remember there was a program that came out years ago that did a very similar thing (something like ‘multiple desktops’) .. but it slowed down my machine so much that i ended up uninstalling it after only a week of using it. spaces is SO nice.. and then there’s the “share screen” feature that they took from the remote desktop app. (where you can take over another computer’s screen if they are on the same network and you have the username and password for that computer) gosh. i really haven’t found anything that apple forgot!

off to work in imovie (and don’t get me started on how cool and easy that

Perfect Hideout download

program is to use.. that’s a whole other blog entry. -) )
